Naruto: Itachi's Ethereal Weapons, Explained

Jul 17, 2023

Itachi's Ethereal Weapons are invincible weapons he makes use of.

Itachi Uchiha is one of the strongest characters in the world of Naruto, being one of the most dangerous villains to appear in the story. As a genius of the Uchiha Clan, Itachi was feared by even the most accomplished Jonin in the story, and for all the right reasons.

The powers of his Mangekyo Sharingan made him deadly for anyone to face, from someone as strong as a Jonin to even Kage-level Shinobi. Itachi had gained tremendous power before even reaching his full potential and one of the many aces up his sleeve were the Ethereal Weapons that he had somehow found at an unknown point in time.

Itachi Uchiha awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan at a very young age in both his eyes, meaning that he had also awakened the power of the Susanoo, which is believed to be the strongest asset of the Mangekyo Sharingan. This power was unleashed by him for the very first time during his fight against Sasuke, when the two brothers clashed for the last time. Itachi and Sasuke engaged in quite an incredible fight which was filled with some of the most breathtaking action that fans have seen in the entire series. While Itachi was certainly a level above Sasuke, the latter did very well to push him on his last legs and unleash his strongest technique when his back was against the wall. In an attempt to kill his brother, Sasuke had prepared a technique known as Kirin, which was a lightning release ninjutsu strong enough to kill nearly anyone within an instant.

When things looked grim for Itachi, he unleashed his trump card and, for the very first time, Naruto fans were introduced to the concept of Susanoo. Itachi revealed this power to be the trump card of the Mangekyo Sharingan and it presented itself as a giant humanoid construct surrounding Itachi made out of his own chakra, capable of both defending as well as attacking on his behalf. Itachi's orange Susanoo was able to block Kirin, leaving Sasuke completely powerless against his might.

The Susanoo is incredibly powerful on its own. It offers incredible defense, which is so hard to penetrate that it has often been called the ultimate defense in the world of Naruto. It also offers incredible physical might that can be used to demolish the opponents within an instant. At its peak, the Susanoo can slice mountain ranges apart with a single swing of the sword. However, what's shocking is that even in the incomplete version of the Susanoo, single sword strikes can do tremendous damage and easily kill even the most accomplished of ninjas.

Itachi was already overpowered as it was, however, to further add to his incredible might, he had found some incredibly powerful weapons which ended up making his Susanoo invincible. These weapons were the Yata Mirror and the Totsuka Blade. These weapons are incredibly powerful and Itachi managed to get his hands on them somehow. It hasn't been explained to the fans how he got them, however, what fans do know is that at a very young age, Itachi found his way to both of them and had his Susanoo wield them for him.

When it comes to the Yata Mirror, it is believed to be a powerful shield that is capable of reflecting any and all attacks, be they physical, natural, or even spiritual in nature. The Yata Mirror can reflect any attack, which is why Sasuke's Kirin got deflected off of it easily. Technically, the Kirin was a natural attack, however, it didn't stand a chance against the Yata Mirror all the same. Any ninjutsu or even physical attack, such as taijutsu would simply be reflected off of it, no matter how strong the attack is. This just goes to show how strong the Yata Mirror is and for anyone to have such a powerful weapon in their possession just makes them incredibly overpowered.

Sadly, fans did not get to see Itachi use the Yata Mirror much, however, whatever little fans saw of it was shocking enough for them to consider it to be an invincible power. Even Black Zetsu, one of the smartest and all-knowing characters in the world of Naruto, believed this Susanoo to be invincible.

The Yata Mirror, as powerful as it was, was not the only weapon that Itachi had in his arsenal. He also managed to find the Totsuka Blade somehow, which is another one of the ethereal weapons to exist in the world of Naruto. It is unknown if he actually found the Totsuka Blade at the same place as the Yata Mirror or even if he found them at the same time. All fans know is that, at some point in his life, he came across it and, just like the Yata Mirror, he added it to his Susanoo.

The Totsuka Blade is a very different weapon when compared to the Yata Mirror, however, it is equally as overpowered, if not more. As the name implies, it is a sword that is wielded by Itachi's Susanoo and it is powerful enough to seal anyone in a world of genjutsu for an eternity. All Itachi needs to do is to pierce his targets with the sword and once that is done, they will be sealed away in the world of genjutsu, no matter how strong they are. Itachi used this power on Orochimaru and sealed him away in a genjutsu world.

Orochimaru would certainly have stayed there forever had Sasuke not managed to free him using a reverse cursed seal technique. Itachi also ended up using this weapon against Nagato after he was resurrected in the Fourth Great Ninja War. Even though Nagato was an Edo Tensei, Itachi made quick work of him and managed to seal him away with little difficulty. Once again, this just goes to show that the Totsuka Blade is an incredibly mighty weapon that can make Itachi into one of the most powerful Shinobi to ever live.

With these two weapons at his disposal, Itachi became truly powerful and was, most certainly, the strongest in the world at the time. The only ones capable of holding their own against him by the time of his death were the likes of Obito and Nagato.

All things considered, Itachi Uchiha was a brilliant Shinobi with limitless potential that he sadly was never able to meet due to his illness. Itachi was a generational talent and even among those of the Uchiha, he was exceptionally blessed. He made quick work of whatever job was assigned to him and progressed through the ranks at a blazing-fast speed. Even in the Akatsuki, few could hold the candle to him and even the Legendary Sannin cowered at his presence. Even the Kage of the Naruto world could not hold their own against him and while he certainly was not the strongest Shinobi to ever live, Itachi was a genius when it came to combat.

With his Mangekyo Sharingan and the ethereal weapons at his disposal, he was a force to be reckoned with and few could hold their own against him. Sadly, fans will never get to see Itachi in his prime since he died long before hitting his full potential, and that is something that left a bitter taste in the mouths of the fans.
