Public told not to place lit candles, lamps on lamp posts, traffic lights

IPOH: The public has been advised not to place lit candles or kerosene lamps on street or traffic light posts as these could damage the cables inside.

Perak infrastructure committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said people tend to place these open flames on or near the posts, sometimes for several days.

"The cables inside can be damaged due to the heat of the candle or lamps.

"I suggest using battery-powered lamps to protect the cables," he told reporters after visiting the traffic light junction near Taman Sepakat here on Wednesday (Aug 30).

Mohammad Nizar also said work to repair streetlights along eight stretches of roads in the state are being conducted.

He said the state Public Works Department was allocated about RM2.2mil in June for the purpose.

"We expect the work to be completed by November.

"Some of these locations include Jelapang, Tronoh and the road in front of MH Hotel," he said, adding that the allocation was mostly to replace damaged cables.

"If there is a need to install more street lamps, we will try to get more allocations.

"We will also look into putting up more road signs if needed," he added.
