Drew Barrymore’s bedroom in her Manhattan apartment technically has a walk-in closet, but—wait for it—she doesn’t use it to store clothing. In a new article in New York magazine, the talk show host and mogul invites writer E. Alex Jung into her home, and then into her bedroom closet—which actually isn’t a closet at all. Instead, it’s her meditation room.

Barrymore and Jung find themselves sitting on the floor in the slanted-ceiling space, facing each other and surrounded by Barrymore’s handwritten affirmations, which are pinned to walls covered in a pink flamingo wallpaper. As Jung writes, some of them are as simple as the word permission and others are full-on phrases: Today is the day you start trusting yourself, spiritual superhero.

Here at Domino, we’re all about transforming a tiny space into a cozy nook where you can relax and recharge. For instance, Barrymore has her room filled with candles and a wood table. Our associate editor, Raven McMillan, has a few ideas on how she’d fill her own yoga-centric chill zone. And in Leanne Ford’s Pennsylvania guesthouse, she took a mini storage space and transformed it into a reading spot for her daughter, Ever. If you don’t happen to have the square footage indoors, you can always build one outside. Here’s how to get started.
